Good signing by Adelaide, they'd be thrilled to have kept hold of one. ( I want my smilies back!!! )
They should be there now Boony...

Adelaide's squad has been named for Sunday's game. As expected a few of the more experienced players will be staying home. Rory Sloane will suit up for the first time though.
Interesting that Brad Crouch is still on ice. Still some groin soreness apparently, but hopefully they're just being overly cautious with him.
Riley O'Brien will be leading the ruck which will be an excellent opportunity for him. Very interested to see how he goes against Sandilands.

Very, very odd.
Can only wonder how much his off field issues have impacted upon his enthusiasm for the on field.

Not doing any media or anything either.
You'd have to think it has something to do with off field issues.

Roo gave nothing away on radio this morning. It didn't sound like a huge thing, but just a breach of standards.
It was something the did over the break last week, so I would guess they might've had a few cans. Wonder if baby brother dobbed him in.
Disappointed about both as Atkins has been in hot pre-season form and Brad, well obviously his fitness is key to our chances of making finals this year.
If it was alcohol related that would be even more disappointing in Brad's circumstance given he's on the comeback from injury.
Annoying that this has popped up and taken a bit of the shine off of what has been a pretty faultless pre-season.

Has been a very good start to the year and the club would have every right to be cheesed at Crouch if he's taken a short leave of alcohol, I mean absence, when returning from injury.

Pikey has said this morning to the press that it wasn't a serious breach hence them still being allowed to play in the SANFL trial, and basically still suggesting they could put themselves in the frame for Round 1 with a good performance.
Doesn't sound too concerning. I like the way the leadership group and Pike have handled it, just making a bit of a point about the standards expected leading into what may well be a pretty tough season. No harm in that.

On the cans at Clipsal is the rumor.
A mate, a Cats fan, had an interesting response from Tex Walker when he thanked Tex for Patty D.

Pyke didn't seem to fussed by it though. My guess is they all made some kind of 'pact' not to drink any alcohol over the long weekend and these two have ended up having a cuttla frofs at Clipsal. I'd suggest the penalty would be a lot harsher had they gone on a bender.

Would be interesting to know if there is a no alcohol pact at the AFC? Clearly if it has come from the players then good on them, yet at the same time it is interesting to reflect on the suggestion that the club may be melting out suspensions over it, yet they are not actually joining the pact by not serving it either. If the club seriously does not want the playing group to be involved, then why not join them at the same time?

Latest I have heard is it wasn't about the alcohol necessarily, but more a curfew issue.
It's all said and done now anyway, and Brad responded in the best way possible on the weekend by racking up 40 touches and also fronting up to the press afterwards which shows character.
I think both Brad and Rory Atkins will be in the side come round 1 personally.
While we put in an okay performance on Friday night we still need B Crouch's grunt in the middle, and Atkins' pace and foot skills through the guts as well.

Pretty poor form rolling Josh Jenkins out as the first media interview after the event. Bloke isn't in the leadership group, isn't a great media performer and he's given the task of explaining the "breach in standards" instead of the skipper, coach, CEO or even the players involved doing so.
Felt for the bloke in that interview, he struggled, battled manfully but it really shouldn't be his job to do that.

I missed that one. Yes, it should've been someone from the leadership group at the very least.
Just having a look at the teams and it's going to be a tough ask picking the round 1 team. I just had a crack and I'm still not happy with it as I don't have CEY in currently and I think we need him in the guts:
B: L Brown D Talia J Lever
HB: R Laird K Cheney N Van Berlo
C: D Mackay M Crouch B Smith
HF: T Lynch T Walker W Milera
F: E Betts J Jenkins M McGovern
Foll: S Jacobs R Sloane R Douglas
INT: B Crouch, R Atkins, S Thompson, P Seedsman
Not in yet .... C Ellis-Yolmen, J Lyons
If I was picking the side I would probably drop VB, put Seedsman off half back and have CEY on the bench - but I can see VB being picked for some reason, probably experience. I can also see them picking Hartigan in favour of Lever down back.
J Lyons unlucky but after watching Friday nights effort I think we need more pace and he doesn't have it.
D Gore also unlucky and will get a run at some point this season I reckon. McGovern has done enough to jag a spot in the pocket for R1.
Tough job at selection next week, but good headaches to have heading into the first game of the year!

I think they'll go Hartigan over Cheney. Lever can play the mobile defender, Cheney plays "big" without being Hartigan big. I think they need Hartigan and Talia down there as Cheney can't take a resting ruckman.
Mackay, I think Seedsman is in the side ahead of him and that might give them reason to play a Grigg or Hampton ahead of Mackay.
Milera, only in while Cameron recovers from the knee surgery. Not sure he's got the body hardness just yet.
McGovern, has he stood out that much for you?

Some good points.
Agree with the Hartigan Cheney swap out.
Agree with Milera only being in until Cameron recovers.
Mackay is an interesting one - Grigg has been disappointing this preseason and Hampton has had some injury niggles that have prevented him from making a case for selection, so I reckon he might hang on to a spot.
I'm not sold on McGovern really, we could see J Lyons come into that forward line potentially. Could come down to match ups, McGovern would be a good '3rd tall' up forward to stretch a short defence.

I think Lynch, Walker, Jenkins, McGovern is too many 6ft+er's but Jenkins will do more centre work, that just means Jacobs is down there too. Makes for a top heavy forward half as Milera is that mid sized forward and they'll want Cameron in there with Betts ASAP to make the most of any crumbs the big guys drop.

Re: Adelaide
Yea good call.
Will be very interesting to see what the reduced interchange cap and the scrapping of the sub vest will have on footy tactics this year.
It sets up an environment for new tactics to be introduced this year. The right coach with the right idea might well be able to engineer a situation where his team can get the jump early in the season.
Will teams select a 2nd ruckman? Will teams select more midfielders? Will teams expect their players to be more versatile and be able to play in multiple positions? All very interesting.
I actually think the impending rule changes influenced AFC recruiting in the off season.

Will be interesting to see how Hartigan goes this year. He is one of the players that more is expected from and needs to lift his game to the next level if the AFC are going to improve their position. I suspect the Crows might well pick him and give him games for that reason.

A lot a people hang a bit of **** on him, but he did finish the season very well last year. Could well be a handy defender yet. Gorilla defenders are no different to gorilla forwards in terms of development really, it can take them time in the game fully understand how to use their body in a contest and reach their potential.
