Chances for 2020 - Eagles
After years of relative success, the Eagles have lost that air of supremacy. Once that goes, it gets more and more difficult.
There's a big number of losses, but my analysis is that may not be as damaging as at first look. James Boyd and Scott Lewis, after stellar careers, were finding the speed of the game tougher and both spent time in the Reserves. Seb Guilhaus has been replaced, their draftees didn't play much, if any, senior footy and a host of fringe players have left.
The 'ins' however, are a bit sparse. The standout is the ruckman/forward Liam Buxton (formerly Liam Whale-Buxton), who is a quality VFL player. There may be a bit more speed through Pudney and Johannsen, while I've watched a fair bit of the Tasmanian, Rhyan Mansell and he's a tidy player.
There aor thereabouts for the Eagles for me, but lower edges of the five.

Seeing the reports of training could be a different eagles side this year .
There’s reports of the fittest eagles in 10 years but I bet every club says that .
With the loss of older players this could help younger players come through.
I saw it written somewhere the Eagles recruited players they need for 2020 not extra imports .

Reckon Eagles would consider 4th position as a very satisfactory result, if achieved, in 2020. We appear to have targeted our perennial weakness of lack of height up forward, plus another mobile tall defender and speed. Our midfield is the unknown and doubtful with Jordan Foote being our only A Class proven midfielder. Can Toumpas get over his injuries? Can Lonergan get fitter to give more run and spread? Can big improver Jack Firns rise another level? And can newcomers Pudney and McNeil add to the midfield? Can Petrenko add more consistency of his sometimes classy but short stints in the midfield?

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
Woodville-West Torrens premiership defender Luke Thompson has assumed the sole captaincy of the Eagles for the 2020 Statewide Super League season.
Sharing the prestigious role with fellow backman Pat Giuffreda since 2015, Thompson has been given the nod to toss the coin by new Eagles coach Jade Sheedy.
”Luke is an outstanding young man with a great passion for our football club,” Sheedy said.
”He is everything you like a leader to be on and off the field.”
The 29-year-old – who has played 161 Statewide Super League games for the Eagles since 2010 – will have the support of an emerging leader in Joseph Sinor as vice-captain.
Sinor, who began his junior career at Oval Avenue in 2010, will be part of a three-man leadership group which also includes strongly-built midfielder Jesse Lonergan as deputy vice-captain.
Lonergan, 25, has been quick to make his presence felt in gaining respect from his peers, having played just one season (2019) with the Eagles since being recruited from the Gold Coast Suns.
”Joseph and Jesse are strong leaders who have really impressed me since my arrival at the football club and will provide great support for Luke.” Sheedy said.

Good to know that Jesse Lonergan, being an interstater and who only signed because of his now departed Uncle Sam, has committed to and embraced the Eagles.

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
Eagles have named a squad of 25 for tomorrow night's game against Glenelg. Missing from the list is Toumpas (a worry), Foote (has he decided to stay?), Jack Firns (recovering from surgery), new recruit Damien Hill, Sinor and Poole.
A new name on the list Carcuri (not from our U18s). Does anyone know of him?
Aside from Mansell and Pudney, can't see any other injections of pace into the team.
Biggest interest will be performance of new players Buxton, Tom Gray (returning from ACL), Mansell, Jones, Seymour and McNeil (from U18s).

Reports are Foote is on the injured list
Carcuri I’m seeing is 27 from SHOS I think I’ve seen written and could’ve been on Souths list.

Hope you're right re Buxton - will get some idea tonight. His youtube clips look good but they were from playing in a lower standard league. A big unit. With Jordan West being in the squad, looks like Buxton is going to play forward the entire game rather than his other role as backup ruckman to Redden.
Also forgot that Johannsen isn't named. So that makes approx. 4-5 first choice players and another 3 in the mix who aren't playing tonight. So will be a test of our depth against the best (Tigers).
? whether Weidermann is injured.
Watch out for young Lachlan Jones - won't see him next year, AFL future bound

Buxton played very well in the VFL, after playing local footy the year before. Previously known as Whale-Buxton, I think.

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
Glenelg 8 goals 5 53
Eagles 7 goals 6 48
Glenelg far more polished with clean movement into a leading forward line. Eagles worked hard but poor disposal and no key forwards firing (Jack Hayes took a couple of marks and Whale-Buxton was barely sighted).
The positives. Pudney looks a very good player - quick, clean. Probably wing.
Lachlan Jones has sealed a spot on half back flank. Excellent kick, strong attack.
Pierce Seymour was also good in defence.
Mansell was serviceable. Rowe looks to have trimmed into a fitter player and we played better when he shifted into the midfield in the 3rdQ.
Best Players: Redden, Pudney. Von Bertouch
Hopes. 1. We were killed in the midfield missing Lonergan, Foote, Toumpas, Firns and maybe Poole. Put those in and perhaps our forwards get better delivery (although Jack Hayes could help by presenting on a lead a bit more). 2. There are a couple of players who "burn" their disposal and without them, we'll be better.

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
The speculation re The Magpies (and hence the Adelaide Crows) not fielding teams in the SANFL tempts the Eagle supporter to recall which players from those teams may be panned out to play for the Eagles next year.
From Port Power: Friedrichs
Mead
Burgoyne
Sutcliffe (perhaps)
From Adelaide: Will McPherson
Schoenberg
(Brodie Smith and questionably Stengle wouldn't be available due to regular A grade AFL selection )
The interstate AFL recruits would also have to go into an SANFL mini-draft like they did years ago which would mean that the Eagles would likely pick up another recruit. So that would make a possible maximum total of 7 players to be squeezed into the Eagles list for 2020 if the SANFL dropped the 2 AFL Reserve teams.
Interesting thought - hope it doesn't happen. Becomes a big disruption to SANFL teams to have 2-3 AFL players going in/out of team each week, even though standard of SANFL list improves. The players (above) would certainly add pace and running power!

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
I would encourage Eagles supporters to view the present Clip on the SANFL.com.au site of the 1988 Escort Cup Grand Final Woodville vs Port. I'm from a West Torrens supporter base but enjoyed the classy football. Besides the class of John Klug, unheralded players like the high flying Hadyn Stephens and Scott Parsons were on show. Enjoy.

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
If The SANFL do play this year in June, the Eagles should be in much better shape than they would have been had the season commenced in April. In April, we would have had several under-done key players due to injury (Jordan Foote, Jim Toumpas, Lonergan etc) and late- starters due to surgery (Jack Firns). Jack Firns, in particular, would have benefited from the delayed start (if there is to be a start at all) by getting 6 weeks of running endurance rather than coming into the season with "little in the engine".
Also that trial game against Glenelg was beneficial in showing new coach Jade Sheedy that there was more work to do re 1. entry into the forward lines and 2. on -ballers. Stuff that takes time for a new coach to impose and, even with players in isolation, can be shown/discussed via video-conferencing.

Re: Chances for 2020 - Eagles
The announcement of our new recruit Liam Buxton, ruckman/key forward deciding not to join our club hurts. We now look to be in the same position as the past 4 years of having no big marking forwards (albeit Jack Hayes does a mighty job for a 192cm forward). Have to hope that tall forwards youngster Jamie Coff (195cm) and Damien Hill (196cm) can step up.
