Amazing performance from the Pope. Seems to have good control of both spin and length. It is often the latter that young spinners have the most problem with but he didn't appear to bowl many loose ones.

LP has not taken a wicket since that stunning 7 wicket haul
His SS career is now 9/462, ave 51.33

There is opinion that he should be dropped for the SA team, for whatever reasons
I would play him for the whole season, no matter what
LP is an investment
However, I cant decide for the selectors
What I consider might happen, is that every time SA dont win outright from here on, may work in his favor
The logic would be, the closer SA is to not making the SS final , the more likely LP is to retaining his spot, purely from an investment perspective

Correct, and it's been happening for years.

Too many batsmen who don't value their wicket enough.

The bowlers must wonder why they bother.

NIC MADDINSON
The former New South Wales batsman has made an interesting debut for Victoria
Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb and Marcus Harris were all selected to play for Australia v India
This gave Maddinson the opportunity to debut for the Vics

Nic Maddinson, on debut for the Vics made 162 , after not been selected all season
Maddinson also made 113 on debut for New South Wales

Theres no doubt Nic Maddinson would have been pleased after that emphatic debut innings

So if we need a replacement for the Test team how do we know who is in form? Ridiculous scheduling that seems to rate BBL as more important then Test cricket or SS.

That’s because money speaks all languages

There seems to be a consensus forming in the media that this scheduling is hindering our Test Team development and stocks to the point of it having a major part in our current woes.

It is interesting that India only plays its IPL after the other longer forms of the game and some players a separated into long form and short form specialists. I guess blokes of the calibre of Kohli can do it all. But not many.

Extending that line of thought.
Could we do similar and have the Shield comp running in conjunction with the Test schedule?
The BBL could overlap it to some degree, if it needs to straddle the Christmas holidays. But having the BBL running alongside the Test schedule is just ridiculous if you're trying to gauge who is in form or not.

You can see in the mindset of players who have had a crack at Test Cricket their patience, technique and concentration required for Test Cricket is clearly compromised by the T20 format and the extent of it that they play.

It will be interesting to see how the bowling stocks fair in a similar way.
T20 has an objective to limit runs. Test Cricket is about getting wickets.
Is this affecting how bowlers prepare in terms of stamina, resilience and variation in their approach? We don't seem to have quality spinners knocking at the door to challenge Nathan Lyon as we might have had in the past. What happened to Ashton Agar? It is 5 years since he hit the headlines in England. Has he become fodder to the T20 format? You would think after Warne and to a lesser extent Macgill we would have had Leggies springing up everywhere. If Labushagne is the answer to that, we've got a long way to go.

Maybe a rehash of the pay structures is necessary to accommodate a scheduling that has more weighting to the needs of Test Cricket.

But at present Cricket Australia only seems interested in counting their $$ rather than looking to the long term interest of the game and especially our long form aspirations.

India has clearly solved these conundrums and as was mentioned, they could probably field 3 international standard competitive test teams.

If nothing changes for next season with the schedule, then Cricket Australia needs to be completely overhauled. Some would say that right now.

Some of the people that roll up in the droves to watch 20/20 cricket will argue why is Test Cricket being played during the BBL season ?

Yes, some could look at it like that. I would venture that they are mostly under about 30 years old.

But Test Cricket is part of our national culture and traditionally is our national sport. It is an integral part of Australia's heritage. It is why the Australian Test Team Captain is such a respected position second only to the Prime Minister. Which is why Steve Smith's fall from grace was such a devastating thing.

BBL will never be that.
