Re: No National Reserves Competition
I reckon he misses the mark big time mainly because they don't have the best interests of the game as a whole in their sights.
Too simplistic and ill-considered to offer a throw away remark that the sanfl loses something if Port and Adelaide are not in it.
As for the high cost of a reserves comp, that statement is a cop out.

That’s what they told me a few years ago but since then they’ve found enough money for a ladies competition.......as for being better having them in the competition, well I’d rather be worse off & have integrity & a fair playing field for all

Re: No National Reserves Competition
I just read on the snoutslouts site that on the footy show that Damien Barrett said the afl will be having an afl reserves competition....hopefully this is true & does happen sooner rather than later....did anyone see it ?

They're also talking about a mid-season draft; we could do without that.

Re: No National Reserves Competition
I think if there is a Mid season draft it will have to have severe ramifications on the sanfl. I think the sanfl clubs would need to revisit their Player contracts, most of which currently have an Afl exit clause. That would most certainly have to be tidied up.
I cant make my mind up re the alleged AFL reserves comp. - not sure if its a win or not for the SANFL..?
The 400k the Crows pay to play fee would vanish...we certainly wouldnt miss the crowds that Port and the crows supply during the minor round, perhaps miss the potential finals crowds though. It would make the sanfl an 8 team comp, no byes...home and away plus finals...a compact season no doubt...a loss of revenue..perhaps..? I do think it will put the onus back on the sanfl to revisit the way they promote the game locally (and thats certainly overdue); it will give it free air so to speak and a chance to promote the sanfl as "suburban warfare" perhaps...Im not sure about it.
One thing is for sure though, I think currently the sanfl is today in serious trouble and this along with the review that they are about to undertake will decide how long the league can last.

Re: No National Reserves Competition
The afl normally is good at telling the same story at all level however in the reserves issues it appear that the CEO is saying no whilst seniour afl managers are saying yes -- strange and unusual but i back the CEO to win.
Reference potential midseason draft i agree that the SANFL Commision needs to act imediately to amend player contracts so they commercialy bind player for entire season and only can leave sanfl at end of season draft.
Given that the sanfl commissioners and sanfl senior management have not had back surgery from australias best back surgeon to stop the tendancy of bending over and presenting thier rear to any afl issue then i find it difficult to see them standing erect for the options best for the sanfl competition and clubs --- much easier to cry we can do nothing and think of the money --- great last minute thought intoduce legal binding contracts and the hold afl over barrel for big money to change

Re: No National Reserves Competition
Interestingly I had an email from the Sturt club on the weekend advising that;
"The SANFL has received confirmation from the AFL that a national reserves competition next year is totally unfounded and will not be happening."
I see even Rucci has been moved to philosophize on the subject.
So not next year, but what about after that? .
...........crickets!
Methinks this story has a way to go.

Notable that Rucci's greatest concern was whether the prison bar jumper could be worn somewhere by a Port team. Nothing about the impact on the SANFL or footy in this state anywhere apart from Alberton.

I wouldn’t expect anything different from that via the Rooch
