Rnd 1 - South v West @ Hickinbotham Oval (Sat 25/3 @ 7:10pm)
So the Bloods travel down to Noarlunga after some up and down trial game form, while the Panthers have been in reasonable touch over the trial period.
As always, games are won and lost in the middle so the battle between Ryan Willits and Keegan Brooksby could go a long way to determine a winner.
The Panthers seem to have some good forwards now with Wundle and Ainger capable of kicking a winning score so the new look Bloods defence will be tested early.
The battle of the midfields should be a ripper with Chris Schmidt and James Ezard no doubt to go head to head with Nick Liddle and Toby Stribling.
For mine, the Panthers should be too strong on home soil and will kick the season off with a win, albeit in a tightly fought contest...
Panthers by 13-24 points

This should be a great game. What is often forgotten is that West's record at Noarlunga is excellent and I think they've only lost there a few times.
West's defence, missing a couple of key players, looked vulnerable on Saturday, so they'll need to tighten up.

A very solid win over the Eagles on Saturday was a promising sign, especially facing a 3 goal deficit at 3/4 time.
I still feel South maybe a little under-prepared as they have only played 2 trials and have not had their full side on the park as yet. Plenty of niggling injuries to first pick players and Wundke and Bollenhagen played in the twos v Eagles.
Selection will be interesting for South as McKernan may come into consideration as well.
I expect a tough game as I believe West will be big improvers this year.
See you there R&B.

Hoping that five minutes into the game West have more problems than they no what to do with from the run of the Panthers!

Cant wait for this one!
So glad the footy is back.
I tend to agree with B&W. I think South might be a little underprepared with only 2 trails. Alot of people are writing off Westies but I think they will be around the mark in 2012.
With South, Im not really sure how the team will line up as I dont think they have played with the side they will begin with for this game.
South really need to make a stance this round 1. Many people have high expectations of them and there is really no excuse to lose this. We have a great side and with the likely addition of McKernan we should have a "cracking" side.
Wests record at Noarlunga is outstanding but I believe withh the night game at 6.30pm......South will win by less than 2 goals.
Will I be catching up with you R&B????
I hope to say hello to Ben W & B&W too.......see you there guys

I have no idea what to expect from my side this week, or any week for that matter. In the trials we played 6 quarters of good footy and 6 of rubbish. I wouldn't be surprised if we won by ten goals, or if we lost by the same margin. Taking underdone or injured players into the game though, particularly midfielders, would be a big mistake.

Even with a few players out, think we will still win this one, South by 22 points

I will back Westies to win this one. Over the pre-season the club has focused on players aged between 19 to 22 to add depth.
Hope Schmidt is OK and that players such as Fisher, Ferguson, Hartlett & Crouch can fire. Hartlett has been very disappoinitng since returning from Carlton. At 25 its time he delivered

Panther and Bloods' fans arriving at this match will be on edge.
The Panther faithful, backing up from the unaccustomed heights of two finals last year, will be expecting that form to continue and even improve. They'll look at a far more productive forward line, with both Wundke and Ainger dangerous in attack. They'll look at a nippy and productive on-ball brigade with Liddle and Stribling leading the way, backed up by a host of talented on-ballers.
They might be a bit nervous about the bottom end of their list if they get some injuries, but they'll have justifiable faith in Ron Fuller's ability to overcome that.
More than anything, they'll be desperate to start the season with a win.
West fans won't know what to expect. The optimists among them will be confident that their best is good enough to win comfortably. The pessimists will merely point out that the hopes that are raised each year had been dashed each year for a long time now.
Most of them will be waiting for Brad Fisher to show his class, will realise that Jimmy Ezard is getting back to his best and will be waiting for Daniel Webb to take a hanger or two on his way to an AFL career.
They'll point to the Blood's excellent record at Noarlunga and a demonstated ability to beat most sides when they're 'up'.

I think Westies look great on paper and I have to agree....2 trails for South with a couple of injuries might hurt us a bit.
Not really sold on our half back line at all. Where is Thewlis???
Anyway, cant wait for Saturday night
