TeleTrack
Does anyone on here recall the proposed TeleTrack racecourses planned for Waikerie and Port Augusta in the late 90s? Would it work now?

Re: TeleTrack
Yeah I do.
I did some preliminary work toward the Waikerie one.
Was supposed to be the big money spinner within the region jobs wise.
Council was behind it.
Land planned and allocated.
God knows how much local money ploughed into the venture before it all went belly up.
Whether it would work again is hard to say.
From my take on what occurred there was so much speculative effort, that I think those who were at the core of it, were perhaps not fair dinkum.
So if it were proposed again, I think the region in question should look close and hard at what is proposed and how much speculative coin is required before making a commitment.

I vaguely remember it.
I believe it was straight track racing designed to attract asian money.

Re: TeleTrack
Yes made for TV, not paying spectators.
Was it Hong Kong who were influencing it? Not sure.
I guess you can't find 2km of land to put a straight track in Hong Kong.
I think there was a council in Victoria interested in it too. Maryborough? Not sure on that either.

Re: TeleTrack
I thought it was specifically designed for internet viewing, rather than TV, per se but yes, no spectators on course etc

Could have been internet, but if memory serves, the whole proposal was mid to late 90s, so not sure how big internet gambling was back then, but maybe not as entrenched as it is now.
The whole saga took about 5 years to gain some momentum and then fall in a heap.

Re: TeleTrack
This project was given the go ahead by the then government in 1999 to a Teletrack Corporate Racing for a track at Waikerie. This type of project hadn't been tried any where else in the world.
It was an untested concept where horses race at night on a two kilometre long straight line racetrack. What was most unusual was that there wouldn't be any spectators at all at the track. The audience would be in Asia and Europe, watching and betting on the races through the internet.
As we all know now it never eventuated through lack of funds I think.
