Round 14 - Normal transmission has resumed Empty Round 14 - Normal transmission has resumed

Post by Booney Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:32 am

Normal transmission has resumed....we are back to a full week of footy, for those with peasant TV only ( No Fox ) it will be a welcome return to the couch for a fistful of action. No, don’t be silly, I mean footy. This will be 3 weeks in a row of 4 days of footy in the week with Thursday night action and another to follow next week. That’s a month where only 3 days of the week have been completely meaningless. Throw in some State of Origin from the NRL and the Mrs thinks I’m talking **** (mostly) when I tell her “There’s footy on again tonight”.

Thursday night footy has been given a real go during this mid-year break and I’m all for it right now. Next Friday morning when I drag my sorry **** out of the fart sack following Port’s home game against Collingwood next Thursday night might be a different story, for now, bring on Thursday night footy.

The return to a full round kicks off with the Swans hosting Port Adelaide in the Harbour City. The Swans looked home and hosed at half time last week against the Tigers and then things went downhill quick. Buddy ran over the ball and collected Edwards with the umpire taking Bud’s number right away, he was rarely sighted after that. Then the only tough bone in big Tippo’s body got lost in one of his ever present uncoordinated marking/spoiling attempts and he too had his number taken by the men in orange. Needless to say, like his last 40 games, he was hardly sighted after that.

From that point the Tigers ( who, granted, can attack with the best of them at the moment ) took control of the Swans midfield and out tackled, out ran and ultimately pressured Sydney into coughing the ball up and scored heavily from it. Was very un-Sydney like in the second half, but, as noted, the two key forwards went missing after half time. In the stands the 2005 Premiership reunion would have watched on wondering where the “Bloods” of old spirit was, well, it wasn’t in Sydney on Friday night. The MRP has given them both a seriously lucky break, Buddy got off very light with a one week suspension and Tippo was perhaps also a little lucky to just get the week off.

Port had the weekend off with the split round coming at a good time for Port fans, a weekend not worrying how bad we were going to look this time. With the two big Sydney boys out and Port welcoming back Ryder to the side Port look likely to have an edge over the Swans in the ruck with Lobbe and Ryder set to take on the returning Myke Pyke in the centre square battles. He’ll be supported by 199cm debutant Nankervis who comes in to aid the Sawns in the aerial tussles. Derickx has been dropped to go with Blicavs as being guests at a primary school spelling competition. The Swans will need to find a forward target and forward come defender Sam Reid might be back forward again. He’ll be about as confused as a Motoring Enthusiast Party Member deciphering a bill before the senate. Hi Ricky.

Port have been terrible with ball in hand this year, skills under pressure and skills when not under pressure, quite damningly, haven’t looked much different. The Swans don’t like losing two in a row, they’ve lost their two key forwards, only had a 5 day break and Port are coming off the weekend off. Port will again be looking for a lift from Westhoff and Schulz in the F50 to aid the very much in form Chad Wingard.

Everyone in the football world will pick Sydney, with good reason. A case could be mounted for Port to get close, hard to mount a case for them to win. Sydney by 17 points.

Friday night footy looks like an absolute belter this week. The ‘Pies and the Hawks with 4th spot and a game clear of 5th on offer. Promises to be a ripper. Collingwood pushed the Dockers in Perth all the way to the final siren and had every opportunity to take the choccies while the unsociable Hawks did what they needed to, beating the Bombers by 6 goals.

Obviously the talking point from the Hawthorn game was the little prick giving the Bombers back half a reminder of their little pricks. Really, who didn’t expect someone to go down that path at some stage ( if they haven’t visibly done so already)? Mitchell did what many of us think and I can’t see the Bombers lads being anymore put off by his little dig than they already are. Really, they’ve got much bigger things to worry about than Sam Mitchell’s smart mouth.

The talking point from Perth was much about Fremantles forward line when I think it should have been about Collingwoods midfield. It really is building nicely, pity the rest of the competition, Collingwood are coming. Adams, Langdon, Williams and Crisp added to their big game experience, Witts battled with Sandy Lands admirably all night and the deciding factor was the Dockers defensive set up holding Collingwood to their lowest score in 6 weeks. This is where the Hawks will try and replicate the Dockers win, by holding the Collingwood forward half down. The ‘Pies mids will give them supply, can the forwards make the most of it against the best “team” defence in the game. The loss of Frawley will hurt the Hawks a little, but, as we know, their system holds up regardless of how many men they are down. Puopolo, Hill and Gunston got back on the scoreboard after a lean few weeks and big Roughy got in the midfield to have 7 important clearances and 7 tackles. Pretty handy from a Coleman Medallist.

Match of the round this one. I’ve got a feeling the ‘Pies might just be in better form than the Hawks are at the moment and think they’ll be right in this one all the way. Having said that, I think the Hawks midfield will clamp down on the outside run the ‘Pies like to create and hold them up. Hawthorn by 11 points.

Richmond continue to confuse the football world by heading interstate and knocking off a genuine top 4 side for the second time in a month while the Giants limped into the bye week after losing key big men to long term injuries. The Giants did look set for finals action, but without big Mummy and skipper Davis on deck they’ll struggle to maintain their early season form methinks. Both sides are 7-5, Richmond have won 4 of their last 5, GWS have won 2 of their last 5 and have been handed two 40 point and one 50 point loss in that time. Their only win in the last month, over the Bears. Not really inspiring form compared to the fully loaded Tigger train that has scalped Sydney and Fremantle away in that time.

Richmond have got a midfield full of confidence and run, Miles, Cotchin, Martin, Grigg, Ellis, Deledio etc etc are on fire. Fair to say Mullet Maric isn’t in great nick in the aerial battles so it’s the mids who are doing the hard work either winning the ball at ground level, chasing and tackling the opponents when they have it or being in defence to help Rance, McIntosh and Chaplin out who are all winning crucial one-on-one battles with the key forwards they are manning up.

All of this seems like it will be far too much for the depleted Giants to hold let along triumph over. With first pick player Coniglio out of the midfield and key big defenders Patfull and Davis sitting in the stands with lead ruckman Mumford the depth of the Giants is getting a going over, big man stocks especially.

Richmond should cement a spot in the 8 this week, that’ll get Tigers fan worried, but this new breed of Tigers seem to be less likely of crumbling in a heap. I say give them time. It still might happen, not this weekend though. The Tigers to win and I think win big. Richmond by 60+.

Well, well, well....what a year the Gold Coast is having. It really has gone from bad to worse. Not only have they been crippled by injury, the lads have been on the red the night before games and drinking when they agreed not to and according to Mr Hunt have ALLEGEDLY been taking advantage of all that the GC strip has to offer. With one win for the year, the skipper still to be seen and the media sharks circling it really couldn’t get any worse for the club the AFL has paid millions for. Another Gold Coast sporting franchise that looks set for failure. With one so called “God Squad” and one Party Pack dividing the playing group it must be a less than happy household at the moment. I bet Eade is really wondering....why?

So the week after losing to Carlton in the most insipid manner they host the Kanga’s who are set to hop in the finals race after beating the newest kids on the block ( the Giants ) and then in all reality catching the Suns at exactly the right time, after the most tumultuous week they could have hoped for. While the Suns welcome back a couple of decent names from the injury list you can expect they’ll be a little under done. GAj still hasn’t got himself right to play and nobody, I guess other then he, knows when he’ll actually be able to front up.

Meanwhile the Kangas have big Goldstein in great form, perhaps the form big man of the competition, old stagers Dal Santo and Harvey use every bit of their experience to keep racking up touches and the forward half has North averaging 13 goals a game, bang in the middle of the pack. Macmillan is giving them some outside run, Cunnington, Ziebell and Swallow are winning the ball inside and Ben Jacobs since moving across from Port has started to find his feet in the midfield group.

If North want to stay in touch with the top 8 they need to win these games and I doubt anybody could argue the Suns are a chance here. The Suns to remain with just the one “W”, the Roos here by 39 points.

The Bulldogs would have looked ahead to the games after the bye and thought they were on a sure thing facing the Navy Blues and would have the 4 points in the bag. Not so much. The Bluebaggers have grown another leg since Mick was booted and Johnny Barker has them free wheeling from defence to attack. After a gritty performance against Adelaide the Blues beat Port to get some confidence running and last weekend used the Suns as witches hats to give themselves a real dose of belief. The Dogs were pretty average against the Saints, despite 12 less I50’s and 4 less scoring shots they somehow managed to hold on is a close but scrappy affair. Wasn’t one for the purists.

The Blues are stoked to have Kruezer back to give them some options in the ruck and forward. While Cameron Wood is in all reality pretty useless he can take some centre square work and stretch opposition sides with Kruezer and Casboult in the F50. Throw Henderon and Everitt into the F50 mix and Barker has the midfield to supply a dangerous front half. Simpson keeps clearing from the back half, Murphy looks to be doing some more work from half back and Buckley and Tuohy add some dash to the backs. The Dogs still rely heavily on Boyd and Murphy to set play up and all the hype about Easton Wood is well deserved, he’s become a very reliable defender in the air and foiled plenty of the St’s marking attempts last weekend. 13 marks and 6 R50’s last week really show he’s helping build a wall across the half back line for the Dogs.

The Dogs also have some off field dramas with injured Tom Liberatore stopped from going to Europe by the club as he has missed club appointments after “excessive socialising”. Whatever that is. I think it’s something Paris Hilton does..

This one shapes up as an interesting match up. The Dogs are tackling machines, they lead the competition with an average 73 per week and the Blues are ranked 18th here, averaging just 56 a match. That number probably skewed by the fact they hardly laid one for 6 weeks early in the year and the last month has seen them increase that significantly, all of a sudden they have some intent. I question sides who lift after a coach is sacked, couldn’t you remain professional enough to show some grit when the other bloke was in charge? In this blokes mind that is worse than playing **** in the first place. Clearly you didn’t have your mind on the game and that’s unacceptable at this level and it’s the coach who is down at the job agency when in all reality he was the one who was still putting in 100% every week.

The Dogs are in the 8 on percentage, have a better attack ( by numbers ) and a better defence ( by numbers ) and tackle more than the Blues. So, why am I picking Carlton? ‘Coz winning form is good form and the Dogs look like they are a little off with their ball use at the moment. Could go either way here, but I think the Blues will make it 3 in a row in a very close contest by 7 points.

Nobody saw the events of two weeks ago coming when Melbourne upset the Catters down in Geelong, not even the 18 Melbourne fans who made their way down the highway while the Friday night game before it saw the Eagles really arrive as a top 4 threat by beating the Tigers at the G.

Many have been waiting for the Eagles bubble to burst but it seems at the moment that their zone defence is rock solid and nobody has yet worked out a way through, around, over or under it. Then the likes of Kennedy, Le Cras, Darling and Yeo get to do their best work in transition as Gaff, Priddis and Selwood bring the ball forward. Big Nic Nat isn’t doing much wrong either and pretty much no ruckman can stop his influence around the ground at the moment. He’s winning hitouts, tackling and scoring. Hard to compete against.

While the Dee’s have given some glimmers of hope to their fans this year, especially the midfield of Vince, Jones, Viney and Brayshaw it’s been big men Max Gawn and Jake Spencer who have picked up their efforts to give the side some targets around the ground to help out McDonald in defence and Dawes in attack. Roos is building the group slowly and performances are still a mixed bag but at least the mixed bag now contains some tasty treats and not just sour nastys.

So Saturday night in Darwin where it will be sweaty and slippery, every game I’ve watched from Darwin has ended up a slog with the ball greasy and the players pretty much the same in the humidity. The Eagles should cement themselves in the top 4 with a win. Eagles by 29 points.

“It was idiotic and naive” Jim said in his presser about the Mitchell needle jab, “Perhaps people have believed the propaganda” he said....not hard to pick who is idiotic and naive. My money is on Sam Mitchell coming out the other end of this clean. So it’s 13th Vs 14th when they take on the Sainters over the Sunday roast and I can’t be the only one who won’t be very excited by the prospect of this one.

While the Bombers game plan continues to stink up the joint the Sainters are showing why Alan Richardson was hot property in the world of coaching, he’s got them not only moving in the right direction ( take note Jim, the goals are at the pointy ends of the ground) he’s got them competing despite being a little underwhelmed with top end talent. Last weekend I noted the St’s take more marks I50 than most sides, the Dogs used Easton Wood to foil that plan and keep the Saints to 8 goals. Without the unlucky Jake Carlile ( who was hurt in literally the last minute of last weeks match ) to play the role of intercept defender the job will fall to Triple H, not the wrestler, Hurley, Hibberd and Hooker will need to be one their toes to stop Reiwoldt and Josh Bruce from dominating in the air. With Goddard and Heppell two of the very few Bombers who can say they have a dip every week far too much is being left for only a few to do.

The problem with the Bombers is they get plenty of the ball, but when they do half of them have no idea what the hell to do with it other than mimic migrating crabs and go sideways for as long as they can until they turn over. They’ve lost their last four games and in all four of them they’ve won the possession count. Essendon mids are like a young lad with a sheila, you can give it to him but he wouldn’t know what to do with it.

Can’t see this one getting to any lofty heights either and I’m struggling to pick a winner. Why not, St Kilda by 4 points.

Sunday afternoon at Adelaide Oval shapes as an excellent contest. Adelaide are in the 8, Geelong are a game out. Both sides will see this one as the old (but not true) 8 point game.

In a true reflection of them both being middle of the road sides at the moment, both are middle of the road for average possessions, average tackles and hit outs. One averages 13.3 goals per game the other 13.2 with the biggest difference being ball use.

Adelaide rank 17th for effective disposal and because of this they rank second for contested possession. They keep cocking up by hand and foot making it difficult to move the ball forward with any purpose and the form of their three key forwards reflect this. Betts has been the most consistent while key big men Walker and Jenkins must spend as much time running around in circles as a dog on it’s own tail. They lead up to the ball carrier only to see a fluffed kick go nowhere near them, they double back to goal to set up and again and repeat to fade....tough gig in the Adelaide forward line and they somehow fell over the line against the Bears last week despite never looking like winning. Rory Sloane suffering another fracture to his cheek bone and Brad Crouch hurting his foot at SANFL level means Adelaide will be without two of their prime movers in the midfield for several weeks. I think that will seriously dent their finals ambitions.

Geelong would have spent the bye kicking themselves for letting a home game to Melbourne slip them and more so letting down club great Boris Enright in his 300th game by dishing up a stinker. Blicavs just keeps getting better, the Melbourne game stats are remarkable. 22 touches @ 77%, 25 hit outs, 6 clearances and 13 tackles. For a bloke who spent his teenage years running around a track he has certainly taken to the “1%er” side of football. He likes the contest and taking on the opposition bodies with his big frame and it wouldn’t surprise to see him given a big task this week and run with Dangerfield. Would be an enthralling contest, Blicavs take the ruck taps and then follow/run with Dangerfield.

There’s a couple of words we hardly hear enough about in Adelaide at the moment, Dangerfield and contract.

Geelong came here a month back and beat Port on the Friday night, I think they might make it back to back wins in Adelaide on the back of a disappointing effort at home last outing before the bye. Geelong by 22 points.

The final match of the round has the Bears go all the way to Perth to face the Dockers. Lucky them. 5 hour flight followed by 2 ½ hours of football clinic then go back to the airport for a couple of hours to get on another 5 hour flight home. I bet they can’t wait.

It’s 1st vs 17th and a quick look at the numbers doesn’t give me much to talk about. One’s top 4 in the important ones, the other is bottom two in the same category. Brisbane don’t get it, they don’t tackle when they haven’t got it and they can’t score when they do get it. Uh oh. Brisbane have lost 5 in a row, the Dockers have lost one for the year. The Bears lose Stefan Martin to another baffling suspension, he was one of their shining lights of late in the ruck and around the ground. So it falls to Luenberger to battle Sandy and give the likes of Zorko, Taylor, Beams and Redden some meaningful touches. They won’t get too many directly from the big Berger.

Neale, Hill, Mundy and Fyfe will be licking their lips at the prospect of this one and you’d think big Pav will get back on the scoreboard after a few lean weeks. Next week Fremantle have the Hawks in Tassie and if they’re 12-1 as we expect a few of the older bodies might be given the weekend off so we can expect a big game this week from the likes of Pavlich and Sandilands.

For a multitude of reasons I’m not going to spend much time on this one. Fremantle by 80

HAWTHORN forward Jarryd Roughead yesterday underwent a procedure to have a melanoma removed from his lip, and will be unavailable to play on Friday night.

The 28-year-old has not been admitted to hospital, and a timeline for his return is yet to be determined.

Hawthorn's primary concern is for Jarryd's health and the club thanks the media for respecting his and his family's privacy at this time
