Thought I'd start a separate thread for this.

So far:

Port strongly linked to Paddy Ryder

Speculation Adelaide are in the hunt for Jeremy Cameron, Jonathon Giles, Ryan Schoenmakers, Nick Malceski.

Discuss away.

What would Port have to give up for Ryder?

First round draft pick, obviously, plus a player.

Who?

Not so sure about Giles, although he'd be a cheap back-up.

The others would all be handy.

Giles would be a waste for Adelaide. He's a ready to go ruckman and with Jacobs and Jenkins he'd only get a game if one or both went over. Better off chasing a kid to build and develop than a quick fix there.

__________________________________________________________________________

Ryder would command a first round pick ( #16 for Port ) and a player of some ilk. They may settle for #16 and Butcher, I feel for Butcher, he had undue pressure placed on him after two good games and injury and form have seen him never recover. I truly do think he could "make it" but he is surely out of time at Port with Schulz, Ryder ( maybe ), Shaw, Harvey, Redden all set for a crack in 2015. Other possible trades for Rydey would include Karl Amon, Kane Mitchell or Ben Newton. All of those would hold some solid currency in the market.

Port have delisted Campbell Heath, Brent Renouf, Cameron Hitchcock.

Not so sure it is going to be easy for Port with Ryder.
Essendon are notoriously difficult to deal with.
That would sound like someone in their prelim 22 + the first round pick.

Agreed, I think they'll be after a tall forward / ruckman to replace him. We simply don't have one.

As with all clubs midfield depth is a requirement, as such Newton may be an early option along with Mitchell.

We won't get Ryder cheap, that is for certain.

( I did laugh when I looked at a Bombers forum, someone mentioned Wines or Westhoff. LMAO )

And I heard Wingard as another.

I think all things considered, the Bombers need to start approaching their footy department with a dose of realism.

Could still be a very interesting summer for them.

A bit of a rumour that Talia's younger brother might be interested in coming over to Adelaide from the Bulldogs.

Paddy Ryder aside, it's been a pretty quiet trade period for both of the SA based sides really.

That's either because they're not doing much, or because their successfully keeping their dealings out of the media.

Well, I like Adelaide's two new players. Lowden is a good player, did well for Hawthorn when he played this year and Cheney gives them a hard-at-it team player. Adelaide needs more of this type and fewer flashy types.

Interesting that they obviously have targeted someone with their first draft pick who is a bit under the radar. Presumably.

Post by Gingernuts on Thu Oct 16, 2014 9:00 pm

Well for Adelaide this trade and draft period was always going to be less about top end talent, and more about building some depth in the squad.

I must admit, I don't mind the look of these two either.

Lowden is a ruckman with promise who's in the right age bracket for where the Club is headed.

Cheney is a player who I've always thought deserved more of an opportunity, particularly in his time at Melbourne.

Both didn't cost a lot either, so I think Adelaide have done pretty well.

Draft pick wise - I'll admit I'm a bit nervous about the 10/14 swap, but to upgrade 47 to 35 is a big difference and 2 picks inside the top 40 will be very handy. A ballsy call that could pay off big time if both the picks are used well.

I heard that they had someone in mind for pick 14. How that differs to pick 10 I have no idea.
Not sure how this plays out.
Do clubs already indicate who they are going to take?

Chambo, either they rate a 'dark horse' who they think no-one else will take early, or they rate two or three key defenders equally and know at least one will still be there.

I would highly doubt this. Clubs would, IMO, be ultra secretive about who they intend to select especially in the top 20-25 picks.

I'd say it's more likely that there are multiple players that fit their needs, and they would be happy to land any of them.

Draft day! Get around it!

Kicks off from 6:30pm tonight.

I haven't really bothered reading any material on who the likely picks are - I think those 'mock draft' things are a bit ridiculous really.

I've been thinking about the #1 pick though. There really hasn't been too many true success stories taken at number 1. Why is that? The weight of expectation that #1 brings is just too much for most kids?

If you were a recruiter fortunate to have the #1 pick, would you keep it or trade it?

Personally, given the stigma and lack of success associated with it, I would actually seriously consider trading it.

Interested to hear what other people think.

From an SANFL club point of view, I think the rookie draft next week will be more interesting.

From Adelaide's point of view, it's an even draft, so anything could happen.

Best result, Wright slips through to them.

More likely result, they take a key defender. There are plenty there - Marchbank, Durdin, Goddard, etc. I'd be rapt if they took Sam Durdin.

Other result, a very good midfielder is still ther and they get that or Laverde or similar.

Unlikely result, they call out Gingernuts name.

Very unlikely Lee!

Someone may draft me to fill a need perhaps. Not sure there's an AFL club out there that needs a slightly portly 34 year old ginger haired librarian though. Haha.

Laughing

Hopefully Port can snaffle a back up ruckman who can go forward and take a grab, perhaps kick 20-30 goals a year. That would be our best result. Very Happy

I think Adelaide would be looking at key defender / outside pace.
