I think one of SA's Shield problems is a lack of technique over a long period. The team is crying out for a solid technique batsman to anchor an innings. I have no problem with 'eye' players for SA, they've often been SA's saviour and reason for watching, but right now we have Head and co making cameo innings without going on with it. I excuse them to a degree as they've only just started their career and will hopefully be the backbone of the team for a long time, but their dismissals sometimes look awful from a technique point of view.
I always think of Graham Hick and David Hookes as two players who fit that bill.

There have been the eye players like Viv and more recently Sehwag who have certainly performed magnificently at test level so you cannot automatically write a player off because of any perceived lack of technique.

This is relevant but not definitive to this debate.

The ratio of Test Innings to at least 50 runs (ie 50 or 100) makes for interesting discussion. No points for guessing who is top of that list.

Bradman 1.90

But for those guys who hover above or below 50, how often do they influence matches with good scores?

For Australia the next are:

D Warner 2.56
KD Walters 2.60
S Smith 2.61

Other Aussies:

G Chappell 2.74'
Ponting 2.79
M Hussey 2.85

So from this I think we can say that Warner and Smith are on track to be at least as effective as Sir Viv, and second only to Bradman for Australia.

I think these 2 could just about eclipse all others if they put their mind to it.

These are just stats of course, but influencing this debate is an assessment of the calibre of international bowling attacks now vs then. I suspect that front rank bowling attacks across all countries at the moment are not up with those of the past.

Therefore, we may need to temper this and see where they finish up in say 10 years time.

I suppose what this list tells you is the likelihood of a player making a big score.
And when we assess them coming out to bat (as I am sure all opposition captains do), they wonder how much damage this bugger is going to do.

Good point about the standard of bowling attacks, Chambo.

You could also add the number of 'road' pitches, boundaries being roped instead of the fence and also the bats being used.

All in all, you could probably knock off about 10 runs per average for the top players compared to the past.

No one scored a ton in this test
Marcus Trescothick top scored 90 on day 1

The interesting numbers in this game happened in the Australian last dig
The top score in the 279 was Brett Lee with 43 not out
The 279 remains the highest score that Australia has made without a batsman scoring 50+in a test match against England

Last First class game
40 B Oreilly
40 B Pepper

He was out Stumped in each innings on debut
That is quite a rarity

Out for 40 twice in his last game [and bowled both innings]
That is also a rarity , and perhaps not repeated in first class cricket

Jack Badcock was a huge accumulator of runs at first class level but had a very poor record at test level bar one innings. In 97 first class matches he averaged over 51. In 7 tests he only averaged 14 yet he had one score of 118. In his other 11 innings (including a not out) he totalled 42. Take out his century and his test average would have been 4.2!

There were some excuses for his Teat performances
Ive been told by an astute student of cricket the following
His first test he had the flu
He was incapacitated in his 2nd test through injury or whatever

RIG you have to give Jack some credit
Every time he got to double figures in Test cricket he made 100 +
