Iconic 80's songs
Being an 80's child from way back, what are some of the songs that best sum up the era for you?
A few that I still keep on very high rotation on my MP3:
Blue Monday - New Order (still somehow underrated)
Girls On Film - Duran Duran
London Calling - The Clash (released late December 1979, yes, but to me, it sums up the early 80's Thatcher England perfectly, with the anger and depth of feeling at the time)
Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley (perfect example of how darned catchy Stock Aiken Waterman were)
Downhearted - Australian Crawl (automatically becomes summer on the beach in my mind when I hear this)
The Way You Make Me Feel - Michael Jackson (enough said)
Welcome To The Jungle - Guns 'n' Roses (hard rock at its finest, they were at their peak at this time)
Nothin' But A Good Time - Poison (hair rock at its best)
New Sensation - INXS (one of our finest)
Fire away with yours....

Re: Iconic 80's songs
A great music era.
'Original Sin' - INXS (Never been the same without the great Michael Hutchence)
Anything by Split Enz & Co, of course. 'I Got You' was top for a long, long time. 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat'. 'I See Red'.
The start of the 80's, if I recollect well from my Countdown watching days, was 'Video killed the Radio Star', by Buggles(?), carried over from 1979, as a 'new' style for the 80's.
I think the top song in Australia before 'I Got You' was 'Brass in Pocket' by The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde ).

Re: Iconic 80's songs
Iconic songs from the 1980s
Imagine ...John Lennon [Its iconic because the singer was]
Beds are Burning...Midnight Oil [It sends a message,'It belongs to them. Lets give it baaaaaaaack." ]
Cheap Wine..Cold Chisel [Cheap wine and a 3 day growth , symbolic of my youth]
Turning Japanese ...Vapours[Queensland National Anthem, I really think so]
Slice Of Heaven .Dave Dobbyn [Because I thought it was an Australian cricket captain of early to mid 80s singing the song]
I was driving Cabs in the 1980s
I had a fare to pick up in the foothills
It was wet, it was scary [the long and winding road ]
I drove up a curving muddy driveway
My fare came out and gave his destination
I looked around to reverse, and visabilty was poor
I told my passenger, I would have to back out very very slowly
He said many drivers have difficulty reversing out
He asked If he wanted me to allow him to back the Cab out
I agreed
He reversed out , and then asked if he wanted me to drive down the hill
I agreed
The destination was the ABC
The defacto taxi driver that night was John Schumann
We swapped over when down hill
I thought this was awesome
My number one iconic song of the 1980's
The Redgum iconic song
I was only 19
