Okay - so I would like to get a new computer.
Well basically I need to - I use mine for work practically all day / part of the night / every day.

I could have the one I have now totally cleaned out and back to 'factory' etc - and I have had that offer to do this from someone very generous ( Computer - IT Thread 2829010660) - but I worry that the 'parts' on my computer (fans etc) are on their way out anway - so I think the best option is to buy a new computer.

HOWEVER - I DO NOT want windows 8 !!
And don't really want to go second hand 7 - as could have the same issues I've got with mine - ie parts wearing out.

Surely to goodness - there is somewhere out there that there are still unsold windows 7 computers?

Anyone know?

A Mum, try some of the smaller compute shops around the suburbs, they can make you a 'puta to how you want it, with what ever system you want, they might be a little bit dearer, and you will get better after sales service than you will get from a dealer who dont want to know you once your money is in the till., I do it that way and have been very happy

I gather you mean your dvd drive doesn't read disks anymore..... if you send it in to a repairer to replace the drive, might cost you a bit. You could try and ring this mob for a quote.. http://www.glenelgcomputerrepairs.com.au/

A cheaper option is to buy an external DVD+/-RW Drive for under $50.
Just plug it into a USB port and away you go.
Here's one on Ebay for example. This one is $41.90 + free delivery.

Thanks alot FB!!!

Must say the external drive sounds the best option. I never thought of that. Does that read games/programs as well ? (trying to put Office on the laptop)

Really appreciate the feedback .

Cheers

It will do everything your current drive was doing...read /write (burn / copy disks) watch movies, install games, programes on cd's or dvd  etc... you can even plug it in to a tv via a usb cable and watch a movie. I recently used one (external dvd) to install Windows 7 on a friends laptop that didn't have a dvd drive..no problems at all.

Okay - well after many months of deliberation (Being too busy to do anything about it!!) last Monday my computer went - 'well guess what I have decided to 'give up the ghost - I'm tired, overworked and warn out'

So in desperation and panic I bit the bullet and got a new computer - I did do what I said I would never do - got windows 8.  So far so good - I have managed to download a program called 'classic shell' which turns the windows 8 set up into mostly windows 7 view... magic/genius!

A few foreign things to me in this system of course, but as I said - so far so good - fingers well and truly crossed that things continue along those lines.

Once again a big thank you to FB for all your help all those months ago when I was first contemplating what to do.
