people scabbing money etc at supermarkets & so on
over the years i have (we all have) had people trying to scab money of us, i never give anything at all, when at work i don't need money so i don't carry it & that's what i say ''sorry i have no money'' anyway there is a persistent chap that tries to 'borrow money' at a supermarket on South Road near Hawker Street, the other day just before i went on holidays he asked me again (how many times can you say no ?) so i asked ''what do you want it for'' he replied ''i'm hungry i need some food'' i said how does a pie or pasty from that bakery sound ? he said ''yes sounds good'' i said ok then come with me & i'll buy you one with a drink, he then walked away from me in a hurry
so do you give these 'scabs' money or not ?

If I have the time I usually do exactly what you did bayman. I offer to buy food or drink for them. I never give money.

At least they ask, that's better than getting a knife poked in your ribs and then demanding your wallet and phone..
But seriously, the only time some one asked me for money was an aboriginal gent in the main street of Pt. Augusta many years ago... i said no and walked on, my theory was that he was scabbing to buy some grog.
No i wouldn't give money unless i could tell that the person was honest and in need of help of some kind. I have often given to some that were 'lets say, 10c short of buying milk at a supermarket etc..' I'd toss in in the 10c if i think the individual was a battler.

Last week a few mates and I hit the casino, and while walking past Parliament, we got approached by a rather disshevelled looking drunk asking for a cigarette light. We all immediately said no, and were immediately met with a barrage of abuse and being followed until we pretty much got to the casino.
I'd never give anything if approached - not only is the money most likely going to be wasted, you never know if they're planning something more sinister and using the 'spare change' ploy to get you off guard.

Sometimes you also have to be very careful how you say no to these people for fear of being verbally or physically attacked. Come back lines like "go and get a job" simply fuels the fire. Best just to be polite in what ever you say and keep walking.

I always offer to buy what they're asking for. Most of the time, they walk off, clearly looking for smokes or grog or worse.

I always just say "no, sorry", and keep walking.
