without disrespecting Magarey Medalists who all deserve theirs, who from your club in your life time could have won one ?

for me

Peter Carey

Graham Cornes

Peter Marker

from another club

i'd suggest of the top of my head that Paul Bagshaw but obviously there would be plenty of others from the different clubs

From about 1960 onwards it was universally considered the two best players not to win a Magarey Medal were John Cahill and Don Lindner. Lindner was the awarded one in about 1997 so that left Cahill. Baggy had the ability but as anyone who followed footy at the time knew, he couldn't have won a medal because when Sturt played the lower teams he would never poll a vote. He would "enjoy the stroll". I remember seeing him play against Woodville one day when he just lent against the point post for a quarter. Marker and Cornes would be right up there, probably second and third behind Cahill

Darren Jarman - 1990

John Cahill

Chris McDermott - for sheer possessions in late 80's/1990.

Bruce Lindsay

Greg Phillips for influencing so many games and deciding premierships 88 to 90, but, not the type of player who would typically attract votes.

What year(s) were Marker, Carey and Cornes unlucky not to win one? Were they better than Robran and Ebert in those 7 years? I guess looking at some of the less credentialled Medallists, such as Grimwood and Duckworth, an argument could be put forward for a whole heap of players who may have been more worthy.

Was it '79 that Cornes played for North Melbourne for a bit? That may have been a good opportunity for him to poll well if he stayed.

Absolutely. He was red hot favourite in 1974 but his mouth apparently cost him.

What was Davies' minor round like in '76?

Obviously he finished that season off fairly well with his dominant performance in the Grand Final.

He was never a chance to win the medal in 1976. In 1976 Russell Ebert was absolutely dominant during the minor round.

He must have been a chance somewhere in there as a 7 time club B&F winner.

Yes. 1974 was the year where everyone expected him to win it, but apparently his mouth got him into strife that year.

Rick was the sort of bloke that after a match would have rather received a beer from the Umpire than votes.

I'm sure his onfield chats would have continued into the carpark with a laugh or two. One of the most charismatic blokes I've ever met.

Whenever he is interviewed on radio these days (very rarely in SA), the announcer's finger is glued to the dump button.

Heard Cornesy mentioned that as well as Chris Dittmar.

Definitely Marker, I still can't believe he didn't win one.

Bagshaw and Davies from Sturt.

Cahill from Port.

Huppatz from Woodville.

Darley from South had one taken away from him.

From my own club, Michael Taylor. I still think he was ripped off in 1980.

That one is always (and unfortunately so) mentioned as it was Russell's (ie God's) #4.

I recall at the time there were hushed comments about it.

However, when you have won 3 of them, your credibility is hard to argue with.

The umpiring god smile on some and yet frown upon others.

Russell Ebert covered himself with glory that evening, not because of the 4th medal, but for the way he supported Taylor that evening. It was a typical scenario of setting up a big leader and having someone come from behind to win it. Russell paid out the system, and it possibly led to current style of calling the votes round by round.

It was obvious that the gentleman Russell was uneasy that he'd won the medal that evening. With the exception of Michael Aish in 1983, I've never seen a Norwood player have a better season than Taylor in 1980.

And yes, I meant 1983, not 1981, the year Aish won the medal. That was an example of a previous winner and proven vote poller NOT getting the votes he probably deserved.

And also when Greg Whittlsea won it too. Not quite the same as Ebert, but similarly was won upon raised eyeglasses.

This system is far from perfect. I guess this has been acknowledged reasonably often.

Of all those mentioned that didn't win one, who and when would they have tipped out the ones that did?

There may be several obvious ones (Kernahan / McIntosh) but their indiscretions were a little more tangible. But even then it is an honour that revolves around subjecitve assessment.

And when this occurs, there will never be 100% agreement.

I honestly don't know if a better system is possible or even readily available.

Just on that 1983 season. It was probably the year that I realised the medal was an inexact science, and didn't necessarily go to the most deserving player. It is, however, an umpires' award, so whovever wins it, deserves it.

There was a game in 1983, Sturt supporters will remember it, when Norwood led by 5 goals entering the time on period, and lost by 13 points. An amazing turnaround.

During that afternoon, Michael Aish played what I consider to be his masterpiece, he dominated play all day (except the final 6-7 minutes of course), and there was no doubts from anyone at the club that evening that Aish was easily best on ground.

I went into the club after the game, then after about half an hour I decided to walk to my car and bring it closer to the clubrooms. As I walked out to Woods Street, the two officiating umpires of the day were walkng out of the oval.

We headed to where our cars were parked. I made a comment to them that the three votes was the easiest decision they had to make all day. They looked at me and asked who I would have given the votes to. I said "Michael Aish obviously".

They looked at me a little strange so I said, "Come on guys, don't tell me you didn't vote for Aish". Their silence was deafening, it was obvious they hadn't. Aish was voted best on ground in every media outlet but not the umpires.

It's probably the reason I think Magareys and Brownlows are all very nice, but I really couldn't care about them all that much.

I remember seeing the highlights of that game in a DVD I have. Don't remember the game as a whole that well. I will take your point on face value AH.

But yes this is the variability (and inadequacy) of the system we have.

Scott Lee was a fantastic player, and would have been a deserving winner, but the odds were always against him winning a medal given he played as a back pocket player.

In saying that, I think he may have actually come close around 1990.

Mark McKenzie (W/WT) not winning one will remain a mystery for me. The opening four rounds of the 2007 count, when he polled 4 BOG's, looked like arresting that situation, but he didn't poll another vote in the season.

Many didn't give Ty Allen a chance in 2008, but I mentioned during a Glenelg game I was calling late season that I thought he was a very good chance. He finished four votes behind Luke Crane that year, but have always considered he would be a very deserving winner. Hopefully his time hasn't passed.

Historically, given the sheer volume of goals, it was interesting that generally, umpires paid little attention to Ken Farmer in Magarey Medal voting, comparatively.

I remember Michael Aish's 1983 season well, AH, and agree that he was very unlucky not to win that year. Memory serves, he was considered BOG in five consective matches that year.

That Sturt comeback was one of the greatest wins of all time
It was at Norwood Oval , I left stunned at what happened

As for Medals,I agree with Hawk , Peter Marker was very unlucky not to win one

If Russell is God you have a different faith to any true football supporter over 50 years of age in SA. Barrie was, and always will be the one true God and the rest are only imposters.

Just remember on the Lefevre Peninsula that's what they actually called him. I had a lot of Port Adelaide mates.

Not quibbling over who is better.

Did people go around calling Robran God?
Not being around North Adelaide I don't know.

And Davies was and is still the best player I saw in terms of turning and dominating a game. But then I saw him much more than the other two.

Robran was called God by the whole of the footballing community, not just North supporters. I can remember at Adelaide Uni in the early 1970s a professors posting notices outside his office proclaiming Barrie to be greater than God himself. Davies was great, Ebert was greater, but Robran was in a class by himself. I like the fact that the SA Sporting Hall of Fame only has 3 Legends, Barrie and a couple of unknowns called Bradman and Bart Cummings.
