And if RD is going to the Parade, where does that leave Port for a marquee player?
They might need a sack of gold to get someone.

Re: Rumour File
Another good pick up by Norwood.
IMO it does illustrate a problem with the SANFL. This isn't a salary cap issue, but is a situation which possibly revolves around employment and coaching. Clubs such as Norwood, who have many influential backers, are in the best position to close these deals, totally legitimately & outside the salary cap. Smaller clubs often can't compete in such circumstances.
Good luck to Norwood, they were just better than the other clubs chasing Douglas, but I fear that a bigger gap will open up between the 'haves' and 'have-nots' and the competition as a whole might suffer.

Very Fair post Lee and I don’t disagree with any of it. These things are cyclical however, it was only 15 years ago Central were rolling in it and racking up flags and Norwood were bottom and broke. I think financial security of a club plays a part and while West have turned things around nicely it probably takes a few years to sell the message/reputation of sustainability. Luck also plays its part too.

Yes, most of that's also spot on, Scrunch. IMO, West's difficulties have arisen due to the SANFL's ridiculous idea that a salary cap restriction would 'save money' and be a good idea. I never agreed with that and look where that got me
However, South have recruited well this year, so we'll see how that plays out and whether the lower clubs have to pay 'overs'.

My understanding is they’re in a better position financially than they have been at times in recent years, but I’m not close to the club so happy to be corrected.

Well my understanding is that this year they have certainly turned things around, but not nicely.

So they’ve improved things, but it’s not nice? Gotcha

There is a very old saying in business.."You have to spend a dollar to make two.." If clubs are operating with one hand tied behind their backs financially ,it is a massive handicap.

Re: Rumour File
Any SANFL club that is making a loss at the moment is in serious trouble as it is getting annual payments from AAMI Stadium sale. Those payments should be going to debt reduction or setting the club up for the future not covering current losses.
This scenario has enabled SANFL to hold off the AAMI Stadium payments unless financial conditions are met.
Some see that as prudent financial management to ensure clubs only spend what they have at a time when there is some money available to improve their underlying position. Others don't appreciate what they see as undue interference.

Good point, Phil, but when we're talking about West's profit, we're talking about the result not counting the SANFL money.
West's debt was significantly reduced over the past few years and it made a cash small profit without the SANFL money for the first time for a long time.

Rumour that Eagles are going to sign up a Norwood ex Premiership midfielder. If from a premiership year, guessing from Norwood's 2014 last Premiership team . Apparently, now a player superfluous to Norwood's needs with their good list of midfielders. Curious who that could be? Any one with info?
