Been some handy to good to great recruits that have played in the South Australian football competitions
Some have been better than the previous club
Some have not been better than the previous club

JOHN WYNNE [West Perth/Norwood]
One of the best players that Norwood have recruited
One of the most popular at the Parade
Arguably the most iconic recruit to come to the parade
Certainly was popular with the masses that rolled up at Sams Disco, John was a bouncer for a while

John Elbows Two Eight Wynne was a tough CHF and Ruck Rover
John came to Norwood in 1970, originally to play for 1 season, and then play in the VFL
He stayed and forged out a great career , retiring in 1982
He most probably would have been a good VFL player if he went

TIM EVANS [Geelong/Port Adelaide]

One of the greatest bearded recruits to have played in the SANFL
Played 59 games for Geelong 1971-1974
Played for Port 1975-1986

Imagine this , you recruit a player from Geelong who played mainly as a defender
Tim Evans ends up at Port Adelaide , initially playing as a defender, and ends up kicking 1044 goals in the SANFL !

Tim Evans was magnificent strong mark
The question is had he stayed in the VFL , how would his career have panned out ?
Would he have somehow become a prolific goal scoring full forward in the VFL ?
Did any VFL club try and recruit Tim back to the VFL when he starred at full forward in the SANFL?
It ends up being a very very successful move to Adelaide

Tim Evans , has to be one of the greatest recruits that has played for Port Adelaide

Doesn't seem to get the real accolades he deserves for being such a dominant forward, in such a dominant club, at such a golden time for SANFL. Very hard to move off the spot, vice like hands, small turning circle and a deadly shot for goal. Was always one of my favorite opposition players to watch when growing up, and was one of the best forwards I've seen close up over a long period. Career ended in somewhat bizarre fashion when he trod in a sprinkler hole at Alberton during pre-season and caused major damage.

Other than Ken Farmer, the only player to score over 1,000 goals in SANFL football.

agree with rr.....in my time it is Stephen for sure, my dad reckons Neil Davies was an awesome footballer & is in the trifecta with the best players for Glenelg he has seen, i can't remember the other one at the moment.....i know Scrappy loves those quirky facts like the Royce Hart one & i'm not saying he was a dud as obviously he wasn't but it is just another case of the inferiority complex that people have with things either interstate or overseas

Purely my opinion
Of the ones that have played VFL/AFL
Royce Hart was a better CHF than Stephen Kernahan
North Adelaide junior , Wayne Carey the best CHF Ive seen

From what Ive seen
Royce and Wayne were more mercurial than Stephen
Once again, I must state , purely my opinion

" I played in 2 Grand Finals in a space of a week
Richmond won the flag and the next week I played with Glenelg in the SANFL Grand Final
It was most unusual
Neil Kerley was coaching Glenelg
I was knocked out in the first few minutes of the match
I still ended up with about 20 kicks and a couple of goals, but I cant recall any of it."

" In 1971, we played a practice match against Glenelg
It was Tigers against the Tigers and we actually wore blue to avoid a jumper clash
I kicked 15-2
Although it wasent an official match, they were going to put my name up on an honour board for kicking the most goals for the club in a [senior] match, but they never did
Im still dirty on that !"

Royce Hart would have his name up in the race (i think it is) at Glenelg oval or wherever it is, as every player that has represented Glenelg at league level whether it be one game all the way to Peter Careys' 448 games has his name etched onto that honour board

DAREL HART [Central Districts/North Adelaide]

I cant recall seeing Daryl play for the Bulldogs
But I can definitely remember him playing for North Adelaide
Played in some brilliant NA teams in his time
Darel ended up being good enough to play for Adelaide in the AFL

Darel was player coach at North in 1993-1994
Im not sure if we ever see player coaches in the SANFL again

Question
Darel played 47 games for Central Districts[1980-1983]
Was his form as good at CD as what it was at NA ?
Darel was certainly an excellent player for the roosters

My memory (as faded as it might be) was that Hart displayed his usual high skill level at Central, but his best football was at North where the combination of maturity/experience and top notch teammates probably upped his game.

My questions are what was his reason for leaving Central, and did they try and stop it? And when the move took place, did North send any player in the opposite direction?

Darel Hart was Centrals highest vote getter in the 1983 Magarey Medal but he didn't feature highly in their best and fairest. He had a personality clash with some of the Central hierarchy and this led him to being recruited by North. He had killed North at Prospect late in 1983. North sent a fringe player, Brenton Little to Central in return for Hart. There must have been some transfer fee involved as well.

You say that he had a lot of top notch teammates, yet in his first year at North, North slipped from 4th to 8th and Central improved from 8th to 4th. From then on for the rest of Hart's career North were generally much better than Central.
Hart won most media awards in 1987 when he led North to the premiership. Late in the minor round he was generally considered best on the ground in a game at Football Park but Andrew Jarman was awarded the 3 votes and Hart 2. If the votes had gone the other way it would have been Hart's medal.
In 1990 Hart was red hot favourite to win the medal and won every media award. In a game against West he had 57 touches, kicked 6 goals and was given 1 vote in the medal. Doug Thomas of all people went up to the two umpires who had been in charge of that game at the Magarey Medal dinner and told them that they had no idea when they only gave Hart one vote.
Rumour has it that Hart's continual abuse of the umpires cost him badly.
He was never quick and by the time he played for the Crows he had slowed up and I thought he struggled a bit at AFL level. He of course had his moments, he kicked 6 goals in an early game but he was past his prime.

Gary Hardeman was a pretty fair recruit for the Blues in the late 70s.
Unfortunately injury curtailed his time at Unley, but he could play alright.
Recruited from Melbourne at the height of his powers in the key CHB position.
I guess he was the straight replacement for Sandy Nelson who retired in 1977.
Hardeman was named at CHB in Melbourne's team of the century.
He went back to Melbourne for a year before retiring.

GARY HARDEMAN [Melbourne/Sturt]
BRIAN ADAMSON [West Perth/Norwood]

1978
Sturt and Norwood met on 4 occasions

Norwood Oval
NW 7-21
ST 14-13

Unley Oval
ST 16-12
NW 9-18

Football Park 2nd semi final
ST 13-19
NW 11-9

During the season
Gary Hardeman played games at CHB
Brian Adamson played games at  CHF
Adamson joined Norwood after a long hold up with a clearance from West Perth
It ended up in the court rooms, Adamson did not play until the latter part of 1978

Norwood played Port in the Prelim Final
Norwood won after being a few goals down early
NW 16-12
PA 11-8

Sturt played North Melbourne on the same weekend in a practice match at Football Park
Both finished top in the minor round , and played this game , as preparation to their respective Grand Finals
ST 11-10
NM 20-12

Unfortunately for Sturt Gary Hardeman was injured in the scratch match , and missed the 1978 SANFL Grand Final

1978 Grand Final
ST...5-9...8-15....12-21...14-26
NW..1-5...5-10.....9-10...16-15

Norwood found a way to score well against Sturt
Brain Adamson kicked 5 goals
His opponent would likely have been Gary Hardeman
Oouch

Lots of reasons why Norwood won, some might have been :
Poor conversion by Sturt
Perhaps a fortunate free kick to Norwood late in the game
Perhaps not having Gary Hardeman

I was at the game, Sturt  dominated most of this game and should have won
They really could and should have been 8-10 goals up at 3/4 time

Gary Hardeman was a very good player
In 1974 he ran 2nd in the Brownlow Medal to Keith Greig

After all the troubles of getting Brian Adamson , he went back to WA after only playing 20 games for Norwood

The Brian Adamson case was massive at tbe time, one of my earlier memories of our league. He changed his mind a couple of times ( at least) about where he would play before the issue progressed to the Supreme Court for resolution- almost unheard of at the time.

Adamson fell on very difficult times in recent years, a very sad story.

Without trying to stick the boot in, it's always surprised me how much attention the late bad free kick to Gallagher received. As per Scrappy's post, Sturt should have been 10 goals clear at 3/4 time well before the bad decision. Their kicking for goal, to me anyway, was always the reason they got beat.

Have you read the book Triple Blue, Scrunch?
It is almost a conspiracy theory about how 78 GF altered the course of the next 17 years.

You're right Sturt shouldn't have lost being nearly 5 goals up at the last change.
A lot of the folklore centres on Oatey refusing to use his bench late in the game.
Of course the poor kicking can also be blamed, but when Norwood came storming back, there is a consensus around Unley that Oatey choked a bit.

I'll dig out the book and see if I can find some of the references.
It is interesting even if a bit drawing a long bow in places.

Norwood beat the unbackable favourite just as Sturt did 2 years earlier.

The Gallagher one I think is just where the whole story has centred and the myth perpetuated by bar room exaggeration. Like they say don't let truth get in the way of a good story.

I think Des Foster still gets a Christmas card from Phil................ Very Happy Wink
