COVERS - Take your pick
The thread to compare cover versions of a song to its original, or even other covers.
Some have been done to death over the years.
So for example is the original version of HELP, by the Beatles better than John Farnham's late 70s version? Some may be obvious, some not so obvious.
Some covers were bigger than the originals.
Covers in the early 60s were common and released merely a year or so from the original.
The Rolling Stones did this among quite a few artists of the time. The Beatles did it too.
So away you go......be bold and contraversial.

LOVE IS ALL AROUND
WET WET WET V TROGGS
Wet Wet Wet had a smash hit with this in the 1990's
In a survey I once read it was considered the best or near best recording of all time
It featured in the movie Four Weddings And a Funeral
The original version was done by the Troggs in the 1960's
The Troggs were a brilliant band and had another smassssssh hit in Wild Thing [the song name given to Shaun Tait in the 20 over games]
I had the great pleasure of seeing the Troggs live in Adelaide in the late 70s or early 80's.
That raspy voice of Reg Presley[no relation to Elvis] is unique when you hear this band
MY PICK
The Troggs
Hardly a surprise as I am time warped in the 60's
9.5 The Troggs
8.2 Wet Wet Wet

'We gotta get out of this place' 1965 hit single by The Animals
The Angels (1987) version sounded better.
'Spirit in the sky' Norman Greenbaum (1969)
Doctor and the Medics released the song in 1986, not much difference but slightly better than the original.

And then there is the spoof version in the film "Love Actually" where Bill Nighy the aging Rock Star with his pudgy manager aim to get him to number 1 in the Christmas charts.
They alter the words to "Christmas is all around me". Probably not a proper "cover" as such, but funny all the same.
PS 4 Weddings & a Funeral and Love Actually are amongst my favourite Rom Coms of all time...and not because of this song!

Re: COVERS - Take your pick
You have Paul McCartney's 1973 "LIVE AND LET DIE" written for the James Bond flick of the same name. Certainly a departure in theme song for the 007 franchise at the time.
It was one of their most successful singles, and the most successful Bond theme to that point, charting at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number nine on the UK Singles Chart.
Commissioned specifically for the movie and credited to McCartney and his wife Linda, it reunited the former Beatle with the band's producer, George Martin, who both produced the song and arranged the orchestral break.
It was covered by several bands, with Guns N' Roses' 1991 version being the most popular.
Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas performed the song on Movies Rocks 2007, a CBS special celebrating music in movies. British pop singer Geri Halliwell, of the Spice Girls, released the song as a b-side track for her solo number one single Lift Me Up, in November 1999.
Both McCartney's and Guns N' Roses' versions were nominated for Grammys.
Personally, I think the voice of Axel Rose is well suited to this song and G'n'R to a very respectable job of it. I am split between both versions. Maybe Macca's version a short half head in front.

LIVE AND LET DIE
Live and Let Die is arguably Paul Macs best song since the Beatle days
For Guns and Roses to be equally as good is a great compliment
9.1
Both songs
If I was made to choose which one
Paul Mac by a lizards lip

Tainted Love- classic 80's one hit wonder by Soft Cell- one of my faves but it was eclipsed by the Living End's awesome cover version in the 90's (I think.)

WANDARIN STAR
LEE MARVIN
From the movie Paint Your Wagon
Lee Marvin had a hit with his rough croaky raspy voice
But for whatever reasons , Lees version sounds good
NEIL KING KNUCKLES KERLEY
Also does a good job with the song
I like Kerley's version better !
Yet Marvin took this song to number 1 in England
7.2 Marvin
7.5 Kerley

TAINTED LOVE [1981]
SOFT CELL
Sentimental song this one
There are songs that relate back to a part of ones life
Where was I when Tainted Love was a hit for Soft Cell in 1981 ?
I was a young lad in the later stages of an an around the world holiday
I heard this song on my travels and took an instant and constant liking to it
THE STANDELLS
Perhaps should be called The Stupidos !
They had Tainted Love offered to them on a 'platter'
And they knocked it back
Oh Dear
GLORIA JONES [1965]
She had the first version of this song
It was the 'flip' song on the vinyl
The A side was My Bad Boys Comin' Home which never took off
Jones had another crack and re-released Tainted Love in 1976
Tainted Love never took off again , and no Glory !
MARILYN MANSON [2002]
Covered Tainted Love as well
I've not heard any other version of this song
If its anywhere near as good as Soft Cells version, it would be good
Spare a thought for The Standells and Gloria Jones

I remeber Kerley doing this at the time, but can't remember it well enough to rate.
Hard to see even a bloke like Marvin having a #1 hit. Reckon he would have even had a chuckle at that.

THE SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE
One of the great songs from the 1960's
Been covered by many artists
I've narrowed the field to 3 versions
CREAM 1967
Eric Clapton and the boys released their version in 1967
Clapton's guitar work is magnificent maaaaan, the song, one of my all time favorites
Clapton went from the Yardbirds to Cream in this decade
JIMI HENDRIX 1968
If you ever ever get a chance , do yourself a favor
Play Jimi's version not just loud but really loud
This is guitar work at its absolute best
Duanne Eddy was the twangiest
Jimi Hendriz is the guitariest of them all in this song
Sensational cover
COWSILS 1969
They have a splendid album The Cowsils In Concert
This much under-rated band did several covers in that concert
But the version of The Sunshine Of Your Love , blew my mind
How does this bubblegumish soft popish band do such a splendid cover ?
Well they did !
9.7 all three versions
If I had to make a decision on the best version this is how I would do it
If I had to play them all once or twice , Jimi
If I had to play them repeatedly , Cream or Cowsils
If I had to listen to the song non stop all day, The Cowsils

Re: COVERS - Take your pick
Blue Moon..... written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934.
In 1961 it became a doo-wop hit when recorded by The Marcels (1961) and later by Jan & Dean.
Not sure how many other artists covered this song but my guess the count is endless.
Edit..the movie..American werewolf in London had 3 versions of Blue Moon sung by different artists during the movie.

BLUE MOON
When I think of this song I think of a classic movie
American Werewolf In London , which has a version of Blue Moon
I think of David Naughton interchanging from man to werewolf
But I mainly think of that girl Jenny Agutter
8.2 The Marcels
7.7 Jan and Dean
8.0 Bobby Vinton
BOBBY VINTON
Has an album which has the prefix of Blue in each and every song
His version of Blue Moon is one version played in the Werewolf movie
And its a good version

Re: COVERS - Take your pick
The Tide is High- Deborah Harry - better than the Atomic Kitten version.
I love Blondie so no surprise with my choice there but I like covers to be substantially different from the originals- otherwise why not listen to the original??
Another cover that fits that mould is The Herd's version of Sam Cooke's 1950ish song Change is Gonna Come. Released as part of Triple J's Like A Version series the Herd's version is a modern Australian take on a classic. Won't be to everyone's taste because of it's rap (brilliant) or it's fairly hard hitting lyrics but I think it's a cracker.

Re: COVERS - Take your pick
STARDUST
Covered by many many many
But there was this yarn that took place just before the start of WW1
ARTIE SHAW
Is described as very intellectual
Must have been a ladies man , married 8 times
He was married to Lana Turner at one stage
And modest
He once said , several decades later[probably 1980's]
" I was the biggest thing that was . I was going fine , but I didn't like the life. There were 6 of us that made the era, Dorsey, Goodman, me, Miller , Lunceford and Basie. All of them are dead, and here I am . I must have done something right."
Artie eventually died in 2004 aged 94
Stardust was a song first produced in the roaring 20's
Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey were asked to record Stardust
2 Versions on the one record, no flip side, both singers having equal billing
Shaw did his first
He asked a week later what was the go
He was told that Dorsey heard the Shaw version and said he did not want an association with Shaw
" I ain't getting on the back of that" said Dorsey
Ahem
The Artie Shaw version of Stardust sold 16 million records !

LOCOMOTION
8.1 Little Eva [1962]
8.6 Grand Funk Railroad [1974]
7.5 Kylie Minogue [1988]
Carole King was one of the songwriters for this song for Little Eva
Would have been interesting to hear King singing this tune
Golden oldy this one, stood the test of musical time
I like the Grand Funk Railroad 'medium metal' version best
Little Eva sings it better than Kylie, but Kylie is prettier

BLUE BAYOU--1961 Recorded by Roy Orbison.
It was written by Roy Orbison & Joe Melson.
This was original version and to me the best by one of music' greats
BUT---A cover version in 1977 by the lovely Linda Ronstadt was as close as you could get IMO to the original with Don Henley form the Eagles as a backing singer

Linda Rondstadt was a honey and seemed to follow the Eagles fortunes in the 70s with that fabled "west coast sound."
Did she and Henley have a 'thing' maybe?
